We believe that a good educational app should include storytelling at its core and have strong input from educators as regular consultants during the app development production of the project.

INTERACTIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Parents preparing to send their pre-schoolers to school for the first time now have a new tool at hand when downloading the Ready for Big School app from the Appstore and Google Play. The app is available in six languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Chinese and Māori.

Ready for Big School is an animated storybook game which using role-play to bring children through the first day of school. We collaborated on the app as a product for CulturalHubb, working closely with founder Abel Tutagalevao and his education industry advisors.

The app aims to help boost children’s academic, social, self-help, and self-regulation skills through interactive storytelling.

We brought Kali and Arahi to life through animation as a tool to communicate to the younger generation in New Zealand about wellbeing at school and how the Ministry of Education can help faciliate that to make schools a great place for students to learn. 

GARDENING IN AUGMENTED REALITY

OKE is an augmented reality app that helps kiwi kids look after their gardens at schools.

OKE is an animated character who gets her hands dirty in the garden and guides kids through an interactive learning experience in a seasonal series of activities to complete over a 12 week period.

Her message about sowing seeds and looking out for weeds inspires awareness of sustainability through gamification using tablets and mobile devices for kids to take to their gardens.

GARDENING IN AUGMENTED REALITY

In collaboration with AUT, we produce a mobile learning experience for Goat Island Marine Reserve. The project included a virtual reality experience about ocean pollution, AR scavenger hunt, and mini-games.
The VR experience followed the adventures of an endangered fish escaping the dangers of ocean pollution and interacting with the VR player to safely arrive at the marine reserve of Goat Island.

With the help of marine biologists that worked at the centre, the experience was carefully sculpted to imitate that of the real reserve.

The purpose of the VR experience was to teach audiences of all ages about the importance of reserves through gamification and storytelling.

AR POSTERS

We created an augmented reality app for international visitors to learn about New Zealand for THETA’s (The Higher Education Technology Agenda) annual event.

This experience used AR-ready posters which were strategically positioned around Aotea Centre in Auckland to encourage visitors to scan the markers while rotating through different stalls at the venue.

We collaborated with the Buzzy Bee brand to introduce visitors to kiwi culture. Buzzy Bee would appear each time visitors activated a new poster. Beyond AR, the app also included a library of photos, NZ bird sound effects and illustrations that served as an interactive brochure.

CULTURAL STORYTELLING

Journeys of Manu is Augmented Reality App that teaches visitors of Manukau about its landmarks according to Maramataka (Māori lunar calendar). We launched the prototype of the app at the annual Puhinui Stream challenge, which was a perfect opportunity to add a dynamic element to the ‘fun walk’, and test how cultural narratives could develop in the Manukau region.

The app was produced in collaboration with AUT University’s Research and Innovation, Healthy Families Manukau, Manurewa-Papakura, and Auckland Council’s The Southern Initiative (TSI).
