REALITY
AR STUDIO IN NEW ZEALAND
Your technology partner in AR development in New Zealand. Pokémon Go can really be credited as the breakthrough app that demonstrated augmented reality’s power to mainstream consumers. AR helps us integrate virtual objects into the physical world using smartphone camera computer vision.
Augmented reality is common in social media and gaming, and it has evolved rapidly to become useful in industrial manufacturing and customer experience. It has unlocked creativity through solving challenges from visualizing furniture, seeing property on a piece of land before it’s been built, through to corporate and medical training with mixed reality headsets.

CASE STUDIES
Our work with Augmented Reality in New Zealand
Experience engaging and interactive AR characters and objects overlaid physical, real world environments. Bring your next augmented reality project to life with our AR developers.
Check out some of our work below!
Commissioned by Colenso, our team was tasked to develop two Augmented Reality applications for Spark NZ for their premium store in Commercial Bay.
Both apps have been in display for over six months.
The Gaming Experience involved augmenting a sci-fi spaceship over a custom-made tabletop. The experience used heavily demanding 3D assets, textures and particle effects that were optimised to run smoothly on Oppo phones.
The digital assets were overlaid on a hand-painted surface which needed to follow the tracking limitations of Augmented Reality for the experience to perform smoothly for Spark NZ’s customers.

Commissioned by We Blur the Lines, our team was tasked to develop an Augmented Reality app for Comvita’s new Wellness Lab in Auckland.
This app was produced in preparation to America’s Cup as part of an ambitious spatial immersive experience.
The app was broken down into two sections. The first one where the user is able to meet the bees. In this section, the bees appear on the screen and hover as we get to learn more about them.
The second part of the app was an exploration tool that uses ARKit and spatial tracking as well as object occlusion. Pushing the technology as far as we could on the iPad Pro 2021, we were able to create an intricate forest with native New Zealand flora such as Manuka Trees, enabling the user to transform Comvita’s store into a bee forest.
We had to scan the location several times in order to sync up the device’s computer vision and blend in with the environment.
This is by far one of the best augmented reality experiences we have produced thus far.

Augmented reality enhances your reading experience with the Green Fairy as your (AR) reading companion. When using a smartphone’s camera, you can point at pages in the book and the fairy magically appears on the page. The free app uses your phone’s computer vision to ‘read’ the pages and display the virtual fairy on the screen of your device.
AR books are increasing in popularity as more publishers use them to engage with young readers. The Green Fairy book is available in New Zealand at Whitcoulls and other children’s bookstores nationwide. It comes as a hardback book and features the fully animated (AR) fairy in each of the 24 pages.
The augmented reality app was developed in six weeks and involved a motion capture performer to bring the fairy to life. The animations were brought into the Unity game engine to be linked up with each of the text pages and exported together as an app.

We are using augmented reality to create the 21st century version of a theatre experience for children. The augmented reality episodes are empowering families to transform their living rooms into an entertaining fantasy world.
AUGMENTED REALITY STORYTELLING
Kids can interact with three magical fairies that take them into a series of adventures that combine both their physical reality with the magic of the Green Fairy’s fantasy world.
As a hybrid production (part-cartoon and part-video game) the stories are accessed as an app through AR enabled devices ranging from iPads and smartphones, through to the wearable Augmented Reality headsets.
The Green Fairy media (including the AR game) is geo-locked to the New Zealand market and will be available internationally after July 2019.

AR MAGAZINE COVER
We collaborated with Energi (Specialist Shopper Marketing Agency), to produce an augmented reality magazine cover for New Zealand’s largest FMCG audience.
Our brief was to create a fully animated steampunk engine that sprung out of the magazine cover page acting as an AR pop-up poster for Energi, outlining its services.

GEO-LOCATION APP
In collaboration with ARA Journeys, we have produced Journeys of Manu – an educational app that teaches Māori cultural stories using geospatial augmented reality.
The app uses GPS data to detect the location and position of your device. When arriving at selected parks and historical locations, players unlock new stories and games to experience and interact with the characters in the stories. The app is offered both in Te Reo and English.

SAINTS OF PARADOX
An image-led story packaged as an augmented reality book. It explores how AR technologies be employed to extend the richness of a narrative for adult readers.
When the illustrated printed pages are scanned, the user has the option of selecting one of 3 separate buttons, each activating a different narration. Each saint has a unique monologue, soundscape, video, and animated instructions that play out over the printed picture.
MIXED REALITY
THE BLENDING OF VIRTUAL AND REAL
With the Magic Leap One people wear goggles with special tech in the lens tethered to a computer pack.
The Hololens headset is wireless and it fits like a crown with a transparent screen hovering over your eyes. Both headsets make it seem as though virtual images are floating in front of you. The sensors on the headsets map out the room, allowing the virtual images to integrate seamlessly with furniture, allowing users to move around the object.
